I think Christmas in Japan is a commercial icon compared to Canada. Christmas markets are held in many places and there are many food carts and general stores. Also, many shops and shopping malls have Christmas decorations and limited time offerings. They are not necessarily for gifts.
On the other hand, in Toronto, I think it's for time with people, especially family. It is true that there are also Christmas decorations and Christmas trees in shops and shopping malls, and there are Christmas markets, but the atmosphere is somehow different from Japan. There is a lot of effort put into it, but I don't think it's on the same scale as in Japan. I'm a bit sad because I like to go to Christmas markets alone and enjoy things that are only available for a limited time. But the amount of effort each family puts in is amazing. Every house is lit up, not only inside but also outside. There are big glowing objects of Santa, present boxes, reindeer, snowmen and so on.
