〈2024-11-28〉Doki Doki! Can I talk in English?! ~Volume: Account Opening~

Diary

Today I went out to eat with friends. I didn't know what cuisine this restaurant served because I happened to stay in the classroom and they invited me. (I looked it up and it is Israel food). The restaurant was very busy and the waiters were all friendly. One of my friend asked waiter what we should order and we ordered them. I usually prefer beef or pork than chicken, but the chicken was best for me in this restaurant.

Unfortunately, I had an appointment for opening a new account in TD bank, so I left my friends in the middle of lunch. I got to the appointed place properly, but I had an emergency! I intentionally booked a Japanese-speaking staff through my study abroad agent. This is because I knew that although I could do daily conversation in English, I wouldn't understand contracts or complicated terminology and I would probably want to ask a lot of questions. However! When I approached the receptionist and went to the place she showed me, the cheerful lady said, “She is on vacation right now, and there are no other Japanese speakers here, so I'll be in charge!” Suddenly, “Doki Doki! Can I talk in English?! ~Volume: Account Opening~" was started!

She asked me if I needed an online interpreter through an iPad, and I said "off course🥺." But, she said, “Your English is good enough, so we don't need an interpreter,”  and we went back to the one-on-one lesson!! I asked some questions and managed to confirm the contents in my poor English, gave her my personal information, and signed every single one of the contracts with the optimistic view that since it was TD Bank, although I didn't read through all of them👏

At the last, she told me, “Your English is very good, I can understand everything you say and you can understand almost everything I say." I was really glad to hear that. She encouraged me to have confidence in myself. I guess Japanese and Non-Japanese have different standards for “can do” 🤨
